About

Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust is a charity committed to helping our young people's sporting dreams come true.

The charity was set up in 2007 to support athletes towards achieving London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic success.

It provides bursaries to give young athletes a chance to develop their talents, the essential costs of training, travel and equipment, plus the costs of competing across the UK and abroad could put success beyond the reach of our young people and the charity wanted to contribute towards breaking these barriers and enable local athletes to achieve sporting success, and at the same time inspire the next generation of children and our wider local community to participate in sport and physical activity.

In 2012 the charity supported 30 athletes these included 4 athletes that competed at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The highlight of London 2012 was Gemma’s phenomenal silver medal success in the -78kg competition.  Zoe Smith also achieved a brilliant feat by setting a new British record in the 58kg competition.

The success of Greenwich athletes was then followed up by Daryll Neita in the Olympics and Susie Rodgers in the Paralympics.  Susie competed at her second Games and reached the heights of gold success in the 50m S7 butterfly competition.

Susie explains that “The Support of Greenwich Starting Blocks has played a vital role in my lead up to my Rio medal successes”.
