About

Greenwich Starting Blocks is a programme that transforms people’s lives within the Royal Borough of Greenwich and inspires and promotes community skills and cohesion through sport.

Since 2008 the programme has supported 579 young athletes with a support value of over £300k, there are 80 talented young people on the programme currently.

The programme focuses on young people who have sporting talent and seeks to provide financial, training and educational support (that is our sport science, workshops and sports coaching qualification) to help them develop their talents and excel in their sport. As athletes excel their stories and their words inspire other young people in schools and across the Borough.

  • Susie Rodgers GB London 2012 Paralympic 3x bronze medallist, Rio 2016 1x gold and 2x bronze medallist and Greenwich Starting Blocks ambassador explains “Greenwich Starting Blocks have played a vital role in my sporting development and are doing exactly that for future sporting stars”.
  • Akielah Ashman-Howe 11 year old gymnast explains “I want to keep winning and win the national title next year, the support helps me and my mum a lot”.

All of the young funded people are nationally ranked within the top 8 in their sport in their age. These are young people with exceptional talent and seven of the athletes on the programme have progressed to be Olympians and Paralympians (three of which expressly commented that they would not of been able to continue to follow their journey if GSB had not supported them. They were ready to abandon their sporting talent due to hardship):

  • Gemma Gibbons GB London 2012 Olympic judo silver medallist and Greenwich Starting Blocks ambassador explains “Greenwich Starting Blocks without doubt made my sporting journey to being an Olympian possible”.

Moving ahead to 2018 and beyond the programme is looking further to develop within three core areas:

  • To support more Greenwich talented athletes along their sporting performance journey.
  • To train / develop supported athletes along their sporting transition i.e. gaining skills / coaching qualifications.
  • To inspire the local community with supported ambassadors/athletes delivering schools roadshows / attendance at community / sport events.

  • Tosin Oke Nigeria London Olympic 2012, Rio 2016 triple jumper and Greenwich Starting Blocks ambassador explains “Sport has made me who I am, and what motivates me for more success is inspiring others to achieve their goals”.
