A message from the Trustees of Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust
It seems almost incredible, but in just a few short weeks our lives have changed beyond recognition and we are all having to adapt to our more restricted daily lifestyles. These are difficult times, but we express our hope that the Greenwich Starting Blocks community are all safe and healthy and will continue to be so through this profoundly challenging period.
The Trust operates year-to-year with its primary fundraising focus being the Gala Dinner each autumn. Without the Gala Dinner the Charity could not provide the support it does to the athletes in our great Royal Borough.
With the current situation, like many other charities we cannot be confident of hosting a Gala Fundraising Dinner during 2020. We simply do not know when present restrictions will ease and indeed, if anything, things stand to get more difficult before they get better.
As Trustees, our focus therefore, was how to balance our support to our athletes and the possibility of no fundraising activity during 2020, with the fact that, as an Olympic sports charity, the Tokyo Games have been postponed until 2021.
The Trustees have taken the difficult decision to freeze all basic awards this year. We believe it is critical to the Charity that we do not run down the existing resources and run the risk of entering an Olympic year, now in 2021, without the financial capacity to support our athletes. This is a decision we shall review, if circumstances ease to the point where a Gala Fundraising Dinner – or alternative fundraising event - can successfully be held.
As Trustees, we are extremely keen to see our athletes emerge from this crisis, emboldened and further committed to realising their dreams and ambitions. We remain immensely proud of our talented and dedicated young athletes, all of whom bring such great credit to Greenwich.
Please do keep in touch with us. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you on the other side of this.
A message from John Anderson, Chairman, Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust
These are truly difficult and challenging times we now find ourselves living in. The government advice to self-isolate is there to keep us all safe.
I can imagine that for our Greenwich athletes it must be especially difficult for you not being able to train properly and not being able to compete against your peers.
At this time, it is essential that we all work together and think about how we can support each other.
It is now, more than ever, important to stay focused and look to the future and prepare for the time when we can once again pursue our dreams.
When that time comes, rest assured that Greenwich Starting Blocks will be there to provide the help and support we have been so proud to offer over the last 12 years.
Please stay safe and I wish all our athletes, their families and friends the best of health.
